Mel Matthews Is Turning Simple Living Into a Movement

Mel Matthews

“I started this journey with a single loaf of bread.”

What began as a personal shift for Mel Matthews quickly turned into a ripple effect felt across households nationwide. The founder of The Homestead Fam, Mel first embraced homesteading out of love for her children. She wanted to give them nutritious food, grown and raised at home, while passing down real-world skills often lost in modern life. That first loaf of homemade bread sparked a lifestyle, and later, a business, that continues to nourish thousands.

Her journey isn’t just about going back to basics. It’s about reimagining how families live, eat, and connect.

“Everyone wanted to learn more, so we built a business around it.”

Mel began sharing her journey online, thinking she’d simply document her experiments in canning, gardening, and real food cooking. Instead, she discovered a hungry audience. People didn’t just want to watch, they wanted to learn.

That demand evolved into The Homestead Fam: a thriving brand offering cookbooks, educational resources, and most recently, a line of homestead kitchen products. Mel’s small-town upbringing and personal health struggles have shaped her mission. She’s living proof that slow, intentional living can lead to vibrant health and a stronger sense of purpose.

“I tried to do everything at once, and learned the hard way.”

Like many entrepreneurs, Mel’s biggest challenge came from her own ambition. When The Homestead Fam began to grow, she wanted to launch it all at once. The result? Mistakes, setbacks, and some tough lessons about pacing and priorities.

Now, she leads with intentionality, saying no more often, choosing opportunities that align with her family values, and trusting in the compound effect of doing one thing well at a time. That shift in mindset has turned her passion into a business that sustains both her home life and her growing audience.

“The greatest gift is building this business with my family.”

Mel’s proudest achievement isn’t a product launch or sales number, it’s the life she’s crafted with her husband and children. From harvesting homegrown food to packing customer orders, her family is involved at every step.

Being home, present, and running a business that centers around those values is more than success, it’s fulfillment. And that authenticity shines through everything The Homestead Fam creates.

“We want to be the homestead brand.”

Looking ahead, Mel’s goals are clear: to make The Homestead Fam the go-to brand for intentional living. That includes expanding their kitchen product line, adding more cookbooks, growing their educational platform, and even hosting in-person events to support local communities.

It’s not just about scaling a business. It’s about scaling impact, helping more families feel empowered in their kitchens and confident in their ability to live simply, healthfully, and on their own terms.

“Food doesn’t have to be complicated.”

At the heart of Mel’s work is a simple message: you don’t need fancy gadgets or endless hours to nourish your family well. From-scratch cooking can be easy, budget-friendly, and deeply fulfilling.

Her mission is to help women rediscover confidence in their kitchens and connection in their homes. Whether through fermenting tutorials, bread-making courses, or honest reflections on motherhood, Mel meets people where they are, and shows them what’s possible.

“It all changed when I started growing our own food.”

Behind the success of The Homestead Fam is a deeply personal story of healing. Years ago, Mel struggled with migraines, digestive issues, and fatigue. Once she committed to homegrown food and real meals, her health transformed.

That’s why she’s so passionate about passing these skills on. What started as a health journey became a movement, one that’s now inspiring thousands to return to their roots and reclaim their kitchens.

“We’re just getting started.”

Mel along with leading creator commerce agency Thrive Creators recently launched their first line of homestead kitchen products and plan to expand into a full suite of offerings. From fermentation kits to beautifully designed cookbooks, everything is made with function, simplicity, and authenticity in mind.

She’s also working on more collaborations with like-minded brands and creating deeper educational content across YouTube and other platforms.

The goal? To bring forgotten skills back into the everyday home, and to remind families that a fulfilling life can start with something as simple as a loaf of bread.
