Mr. Tran Thanh Trung, Chairman of the Board and CEO of MCIC, is a pioneer in researching and developing an industrial-scale soil stabilization system to support land reclamation projects in Vietnam. With strategic vision and technological foresight, Mr. Tran Thanh Trung drives land reclamation innovation, opening up a promising “blue ocean” market worth billions of dollars annually in the field of dredging and reclamation.

As one of Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing economies, Vietnam faces mounting pressure to expand its infrastructure while preserving its natural environment. With over 3,000 kilometers of coastline and rapid urbanization in coastal areas, the country must balance development needs with limited land and resource constraints. This makes innovative land reclamation solutions especially vital to Vietnam’s long-term growth strategy.

Land reclamation technology is becoming more important to tackle challenges in maritime and infrastructure development

With over 20 years of experience in port design and construction, Mr. Tran Thanh Trung recognizes the vast potential of Vietnam’s maritime economy, while also emphasizing major challenges. He shares:

“Vietnam is geographically well-positioned to participate in the global supply chain. However, achieving sustainable double-digit economic growth from 2026 onwards remains a major challenge. To make a breakthrough, Vietnam must address national-level issues such as a shortage of sand for land leveling, illegal sand mining, and difficulties in managing dredged sludge from maritime projects.”

It is estimated that in the coming years, Vietnam will generate around 50 million cubic meters of dredged sludge annually from maritime channels and construction projects. Meanwhile, sand resources are rapidly depleting, and legal sand extraction is unable to meet demand. Illegal mining has caused severe environmental and social consequences.

New technology is transforming dredged sludge into a valuable resource for coastal development

To tackle this issue, Mr. Tran Thanh Trung has guided MCIC to develop a distinct technology that opens up a billion-dollar market. He observed that extracting seabed sand from estuaries and dumping dredged sludge into deep-sea waters has harmful impacts on marine ecosystems.

As early as 2015, he began researching and adapting Japan’s compressed air mixing technology – a cutting-edge core component in the sludge stabilization and solidification system. This system enables the production of effective land reclamation materials, addressing both the sand shortage and the sustainable treatment of dredged sludge.

The MCIC sludge stabilization system can process up to 1,000 m³ per hour per independent unit. The K-DPM technology, based on compressed air mixing principles, is particularly suitable for dredging and land reclamation projects such as ports, industrial zones, and coastal urban developments.

Stabilizing sludge is reducing project costs and protecting Vietnam’s marine ecosystems

This sludge stabilization technology not only handles massive volumes of dredged material, but also delivers significant benefits. Applying the technology can cut transportation and treatment costs, while generating abundant fill material to meet growing construction needs. It is estimated that the technology can save around 30% of costs compared to traditional methods.

Moreover, the solution protects the marine environment, reduces reliance on sand from rivers and estuaries, and avoids the ecological damage caused by sand mining. It helps prevent shoreline erosion and maintain coastal ecosystem balance. Transforming dredged sludge into fill material is not just a technical fix – it’s part of a comprehensive environmental protection strategy.

Global case studies are proving this technology works — and Vietnam is ready to scale it

This sludge stabilization technology has been successfully deployed in several major international projects, including:

  • Chubu Airport, Japan (2002)

  • Nanao Port, Japan (2005)

  • Tokyo International Airport (2009)

  • Marina Bay Redevelopment, Singapore (2011)

  • New York Harbor (2015)

In Vietnam, technologies such as land reclamation technology has been localized to suit the domestic market, helping reduce costs and improve effectiveness for port and coastal urban development projects. Real-world applications have proven its ability to address urgent issues such as sand shortages, environmental protection, and sustainable infrastructure development.

Vietnam’s future growth depends on bold innovation in maritime infrastructure

The development of sludge stabilization technology is not just a technical solution but an integral part of Vietnam’s sustainable development strategy. In the face of climate change, adopting such solutions is more urgent than ever. The technology helps reduce environmental impact, protect marine ecosystems, and contribute to the national maritime strategy.

With vision and agility, Mr. Trung has inspired young Vietnamese to engage in research and advanced technology. As Tran Thanh Trung drives land reclamation innovation, he also contributes to building a stronger, more sustainable Vietnam in a new era — a country prepared to thrive in a competitive global economy.
