Uber CEO Gen Z advice: Why the future of leadership demands both engineering and empathy

Uber CEO Gen Z leadership advice is simple, but sharp: study engineering and liberal arts. Dara Khosrowshahi, the head of the ride-hailing giant, recently told a crowd at Brown University that mastering both technical depth and human connection is no longer optional — it’s essential for tomorrow’s business leaders.

“One of my secrets is—really, I do give Brown credit for this—this balanced education that I kind of stumbled on,” he said during a panel at his Ivy League alma mater. For Gen Z grads eyeing the corner office, Khosrowshahi says the combination of STEM and storytelling is no longer a nice-to-have. It’s a necessity.

As seen in Millionaire MNL, leadership in the AI era demands a new kind of balance: IQ meets EQ, logic meets narrative, systems meet soul.

The two subjects every aspiring leader needs

Khosrowshahi didn’t mince words. In his view, the leaders who will thrive in the coming decades are those who can code a prototype and pitch a vision.

“Engineering gives you the tools to build,” he said. “Liberal arts gives you the tools to inspire.”

The Uber CEO Gen Z recommendation is rooted in real-world pressure. Today’s executives are expected to understand AI, automation, and data privacy — but also to speak to culture, ethics, and public trust. As companies face growing scrutiny, it’s no longer enough to be a back-end genius or a polished communicator. You need both.

Khosrowshahi believes a dual focus helps leaders make smarter decisions and stay grounded as complexity increases.

Why this matters more in the AI era

Artificial intelligence has added a new layer of urgency to the talent equation. Technical leaders must now understand neural networks and governance policies. Meanwhile, public-facing CEOs are expected to navigate transparency, stakeholder alignment, and social responsibility.

Uber CEO Gen Z insights come from experience. Khosrowshahi has spent the last several years steering Uber through reputational crises, pandemic shocks, and AI integration — all while keeping investors confident and regulators engaged.

For him, education isn’t just about credentials. It’s about range. “You need to be able to talk to engineers and empathize with drivers in the same day,” he said.

As mentioned by Millionaire MNL, it’s a trend many modern CEOs echo: from Airbnb to Apple, leaders are blending deep technical literacy with creative communication.

Gen Z: smart, social, and ready to lead

Khosrowshahi sees Gen Z as well-positioned — but only if they’re intentional. Many already value purpose, inclusion, and systems thinking. But to lead, they’ll need to stretch further.

The Uber CEO Gen Z message is not about overloading course loads. It’s about understanding how systems and stories work together. Engineering provides precision. Liberal arts brings perspective.

The business world won’t reward either skill in isolation much longer.
