Shopify is saying the quiet part out loud: AI will replace new hiring – other CEOs just won’t admit it

Shopify’s CEO, Tobias Lütke, dropped a bombshell this week. On April 7, 2025, he told his 8,000-plus employees via a memo, shared on X, that AI replaces hiring unless proven otherwise. Teams must justify why artificial intelligence can’t handle a task before adding staff. This bold move, reported by Yahoo Finance, signals a shift—AI replaces hiring, and Shopify’s not shy about it. Other CEOs dodge the truth, but Lütke’s saying it loud.

The memo’s clear. “Using AI effectively is now a fundamental expectation,” Lütke wrote. Managers can’t request headcount without showing AI’s limits. Shopify’s betting on tech over bodies—a stance that’s rattling cages. While markets reel from Trump’s tariff swings, per Reuters today, Shopify’s focus is AI-first efficiency.

Others whisper it. Salesforce’s Marc Benioff hinted at “incredible productivity gains” from AI, per Tom’s Guide. Flexport’s Ryan Petersen nodded at Lütke’s memo on X, agreeing silently. Yet Shopify’s the one shouting: AI replaces hiring, and the future’s here.

Shopify’s big AI bet

Lütke’s not bluffing. Shopify’s memo, detailed by Forbes, ties AI to performance reviews. Employees must wield tools like GitHub Copilot or Shopify Magic daily. AI replaces hiring by boosting output—$2.81 billion in Q4 revenue proves it, per Benzinga. The firm’s leaner now, down from 10,000 to 8,100 staff after 2023 cuts.

Tech’s the muscle. Shopify’s Sidekick chatbot and automation suites handle tasks once needing humans. “It’s a multiplier,” Lütke told Digital Commerce 360. AI replaces hiring not out of spite, but strategy—fewer people, more profit. Rivals watch, but few match this gutsy pivot.

Contrast runs deep. Fiverr’s Micha Kaufman told Yahoo Finance he’s pushing AI efficiency too—no new hires until it’s maxed out. Yet his tone’s softer, less blunt. Shopify’s Lütke doesn’t flinch—AI replaces hiring, and he’s fine ruffling feathers to prove it.

CEOs play coy, Shopify doesn’t

Others hedge. Amazon’s all-in on “agentic AI,” per TechRadar, but won’t say it cuts jobs. Klarna’s embracing AI speed, per Windows Central, yet frames it as “fewer hires,” not replacement. Shopify’s memo, per Business Today, lays it bare—AI replaces hiring, no sugarcoating. CEOs elsewhere dodge that stark truth.

Why the silence? Fear, maybe. Tech layoffs hit 28,000 in 2025 already, per Forbes, after 152,000 in 2024. Admitting AI replaces hiring risks backlash—unions, workers, headlines. Shopify shrugs it off. “Adapt or slide,” Lütke warned in his memo, per Entrepreneur. He’s betting employees rise to it.

Data backs him. OpenAI’s Sam Altman told India TV that AI handles over 50% of coding at some firms. Google’s at 25% AI-generated code. Shopify’s not alone -AI replaces hiring quietly everywhere. Millionaires see it—investors like this lean, mean future.

Jobs shift, not vanish- yet

AI’s no full takeover. Shopify still needs humans—8,100 prove it. Lütke’s memo, per The Hindu, pushes AI as a partner—coding, writing, prototyping. AI replaces hiring for rote tasks, not all roles. “Prove you’re better than AI,” he challenges, per ABP Live.

Others echo this. Qualaix’s Marva Bailer told NewsNation AI accelerates ideas—humans stay vital. Shopify’s not firing; it’s freezing growth. Past cuts -20% in 2023 – set the stage, per YourStory. Now, AI replaces hiring to keep headcount tight while output climbs.

Risks lurk. X posts today call it “leadership crisis” or “mediocre.” Critics say Shopify’s betting too hard. But Lütke’s memo, per Financial Express, doubles down—AI’s non-optional. If it flops, he’s exposed. If it works, he’s ahead.

Future’s AI-first, like it or not

Shopify’s not waiting. “We’re all in,” Lütke wrote, per Tom’s Guide. AI replaces hiring as markets wobble—S&P 500’s down 3% today, per Reuters. Trump’s tariff pause fades, but Shopify’s eyes are on tech, not trade. Efficiency’s the game, and AI’s the ace.

Others lag. Most CEOs mull AI quietly—Shopify acts. “It’s not feasible to opt out,” Lütke told Windows Central. Competitors like Wix or Amazon tweak AI tools, per Financial Express, but dodge hiring freezes. Shopify’s memo sets a bar—AI replaces hiring, and they’re proving it works.

Looking ahead, Shopify’s stance ripples. If AI delivers—think faster stores, happier merchants—others follow. If it stumbles, it’s a cautionary tale. Either way, Lütke’s loud truth reshapes work. AI replaces hiring, and silence won’t change it.
