The controversy underscores growing unease about how generative AI intersects with personal data, raising questions about whether users fully understand what they’re agreeing to when interacting with AI-powered services.
Ads Powered by Conversations
At the core of the concern is how Meta integrates chatbot interactions into its massive advertising ecosystem. When users ask questions, share personal thoughts, or even casually chat with Meta’s AI, that data can be mined to infer preferences and interests. Those signals then influence the ads people see across Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger.
On paper, Meta discloses that interactions may be used to improve services or personalize experiences. But experts argue the disclosures are buried in long terms of service documents, making the practice effectively invisible to most users.

But experts argue that Meta’s scale makes its approach uniquely consequential. With billions of users worldwide, the way Meta sets norms could shape expectations – and abuses – across the industry.
