Julie Sweet shares career advice on taking big jobs

Fortune

“Never say no just because you don’t feel ready”

Julie Sweet, the CEO of Accenture and one of the most powerful leaders in the consulting industry, has a clear message for professionals facing intimidating career opportunities: don’t let self-doubt be the reason you turn down a big role.

Speaking about her own leadership journey, Sweet emphasized that many people, especially women, hesitate when offered high-profile positions because they question whether they are truly ready. Her advice is simple but powerful: never say no simply because you don’t feel ready.

“Growth happens outside of comfort zones”

Sweet’s guidance reflects her own career trajectory. Before becoming CEO of Accenture in 2019, she served as general counsel and later as chief executive of Accenture’s North America business. Each step required her to embrace challenges that initially felt daunting, but those leaps ultimately prepared her for global leadership.

She notes that readiness often comes from experience gained on the job, not from waiting until every skill or scenario has been mastered. By leaning into discomfort, leaders can unlock rapid growth and prepare themselves for responsibilities they might once have thought unattainable.

“Self-doubt is common, but it shouldn’t dictate decisions”

According to Sweet, one of the most common mistakes professionals make is overvaluing perfection before pursuing advancement. Many decline opportunities because they believe someone else is more qualified, or because they want more years of experience before making the jump.

But in fast-moving industries, waiting can mean missing out entirely. Sweet argues that confidence is built through action, and leaders who take on new challenges prove their ability not only to themselves, but to those who entrusted them with the opportunity.

“Courage over perfection defines great leaders”

For Sweet, the lesson is universal: the leaders who thrive are the ones who embrace courage over perfection. Accepting a job you don’t feel ready for doesn’t mean recklessness, it means trusting that you can rise to the occasion, draw on your team, and grow into the role.

Her perspective resonates across industries where disruption is constant. In a world where careers are less linear and leadership demands are evolving, Sweet’s advice serves as a reminder that hesitation can hold back even the most talented professionals.

As she puts it, “If you’re offered the opportunity, someone already believes you can do it. Don’t let your self-doubt be louder than their belief.”
