How Lucas Le Bell Went From J.P. Morgan Banker to Leading the Global Anti-Drone Race

Lucas Le Bell

From Banking to Aerospace Defense

Before becoming a leader in the global anti-drone market, Lucas Le Bell built his career in high finance. As a former private banker at J.P. Morgan, he gained a deep understanding of international capital markets and complex asset strategies. Yet his ambitions extended beyond the world of banking. A graduate of emlyon business school, Lucas envisioned building a technology-driven company with global impact, one capable of solving a modern security challenge few had even begun to address.

Founding CerbAir to Counter the Drone Era’s Risks

In 2015, Lucas co-founded CerbAir, a Paris-based technology company focused on counter-unmanned aerial vehicle (C-UAV) solutions. His mission was clear: to protect sensitive sites, events, and national infrastructure from unauthorized drones. The timing was prescient. Around the world, drones were becoming both indispensable tools and potential security threats, creating a gap for robust, scalable defense systems.

CerbAir’s systems combine radio frequency detection, radar, optronics, and jamming technologies to deliver real-time drone detection and neutralization. These capabilities are vital for airports, military bases, prisons, government facilities, and high-profile public gatherings, anywhere an aerial breach could have serious consequences.

The Innovation Behind CHIMERA

One of CerbAir’s standout innovations is CHIMERA, a portable, integrated solution that allows security teams to detect, locate, and neutralize drones from a single platform. CHIMERA’s multi-layered approach makes it accessible for various operational needs, from temporary event protection to permanent site security. By integrating multiple detection technologies with swift response tools, Lucas and his team have positioned CerbAir as a trusted partner for governments and private operators alike.

Scaling Through Strategic Funding

Lucas’s ability to grow CerbAir has been underpinned by targeted investment rounds. After securing €500,000 in seed funding in 2015, the company expanded its R&D and market reach. A €1.5 million round in 2017 allowed for deeper technology integration and early client deployments. The momentum continued with a €5.5 million funding round in 2019, attracting backing from investors like Boundary Holding and Technofounders, capital that accelerated global expansion and product diversification.

These strategic infusions of capital were more than just financial milestones. They reflected investor confidence in CerbAir’s market positioning and Lucas’s vision to address a rapidly evolving security landscape.

Consolidating Leadership and Direction

In 2022, Lucas took full control of CerbAir following the departure of co-founder and chairman Olivier Le Blainvaux. This consolidation of leadership allowed Lucas to steer the company with a singular vision, focusing on agile innovation and strategic partnerships. The move signaled his commitment to ensuring CerbAir remains at the forefront of counter-drone defense in an increasingly competitive global market.

A Market with Geopolitical Relevance

CerbAir operates at the intersection of security, technology, and geopolitics. Drone-related threats are no longer hypothetical, incidents at major airports, border areas, and even during high-level political events have shown how disruptive unmanned aerial systems can be. Lucas’s work is part of a broader global push to secure critical infrastructure against airborne risks, making his leadership role not only entrepreneurial but also geopolitically significant.

The Entrepreneurial Mindset Behind the Mission

Lucas’s journey from banking to deep-tech entrepreneurship reflects a strategic, opportunity-driven mindset. Where others might have seen drones purely as a commercial trend, he identified the vulnerabilities they introduced, and the need for specialized countermeasures. His financial background has equipped him with the discipline to scale a capital-intensive tech business, while his vision ensures CerbAir remains adaptable in a market defined by constant innovation.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Airspace Security

Under Lucas’s leadership, CerbAir continues to push the boundaries of C-UAV capabilities. As drone adoption grows across industries, from logistics to entertainment, the demand for agile, effective countermeasures will only increase. Lucas is positioning CerbAir to not only meet today’s challenges but anticipate tomorrow’s, with solutions that balance security with the operational realities of modern airspace.

By blending advanced engineering with strategic foresight, Lucas Le Bell has transformed CerbAir from a startup into a recognized player in a field that directly impacts public safety and national security. His work underscores the vital role that entrepreneurial innovation plays in safeguarding the future.
