How Perplexity AI Founder Built an $18B Google Challenger

Perplexity AI rose from a niche search startup to a tech unicorn valued at $18 billion under the leadership of co-founder Aravind Srinivas. By combining next-generation language models with an intuitive interface, Srinivas has challenged the search giant’s dominance and rewritten the rules of online information retrieval.

From search query to startup

Srinivas, an early OpenAI engineer, saw limitations in traditional search engines. He believed that generative AI could transform how users ask questions, and how companies present answers. In late 2022, he teamed with two fellow researchers to launch Perplexity AI, focusing on concise, sourced responses rather than endless link lists. This fresh approach to search resonated with investors and users alike, catapulting Perplexity AI into the spotlight.

Building the team

To scale quickly, Srinivas recruited top talent from AI labs and tech giants. He offered competitive equity and fostered a culture of experimentation. Today, Perplexity AI employs over 200 engineers, data scientists, and product designers who collaborate across offices in San Francisco and London. By emphasizing cross-functional squads, Srinivas ensured that Perplexity AI could iterate features at cloud speed.

Strategic funding leaps

Perplexity AI’s rise owed much to its savvy capital strategy. In early 2023, the startup closed a $35 million Series A led by Lightspeed. Six months later, a blockbuster $150 million Series B at a $4 billion valuation set the stage for explosive growth. In 2025, a $500 million Series C from top-tier investors pushed the valuation to $18 billion, highlighting investor belief that Perplexity AI could seize search market share from Google.

Product innovations

Key to Perplexity AI’s appeal are features like “source snippets”, which display exact citations alongside AI-generated summaries, and a real-time query builder that refines follow-up questions automatically. Under Srinivas, the team launched developer APIs, enabling third-party apps to integrate Perplexity AI’s search capabilities. These product moves deepened user engagement and locked in enterprise clients seeking private, on-premise deployments.

Chasing Google’s throne

Today, Perplexity AI handles over 50 million queries daily, a figure that rivals Google’s nascent AI search experiments. Srinivas argues that by focusing on precision, transparency, and speed, Perplexity AI can unseat long-standing incumbents. He’s also pledged to reinvest profits into R&D, aiming to expand into voice assistants and knowledge-management tools. As Millionaire MNL noted, his vision isn’t just to be a search alternative, it’s to redefine how information powers decision-making.

Monetization and partnerships

To build a sustainable business, Srinivas introduced a tiered subscription model for power users and a usage-based pricing plan for enterprises. Partnerships with major publishers ensured high-quality data feeds, while alliances with cloud providers guaranteed the compute horsepower Perplexity AI needed to stay responsive at scale. These commercial strategies have translated into projected revenues of over $200 million for 2025.

Lessons from the journey

Aravind Srinivas’s story offers several takeaways: prioritize user trust with transparent sourcing, move fast but structure teams for stability, and align funding rounds with clear product milestones. Above all, his emphasis on marrying cutting-edge AI with real-world utility has set Perplexity AI apart, and driven its $18 billion valuation.
