How Hiten Shah built 5 SaaS companies that quietly power millions

Hiten Shah didn’t build one breakout SaaS company. He built five. Over the last two decades, Shah has quietly shaped the internet through a string of must-have tools used by marketers, product teams, and founders across the globe.

Why Forbes and Sam Altman are betting on this young founder’s credit card startup

From Crazy Egg to KISSmetrics, FYI, and Nira, Shah’s companies share a single trait — they solve simple, high-leverage problems with ruthless clarity. Alongside co-founder Neil Patel in many ventures, Shah has built tools that are often used daily, yet rarely scream for attention.

As seen in Millionaire MNL, he represents a different kind of founder — one who builds utility at scale while staying behind the spotlight.

From heatmaps to real-time document security

Shah’s startup journey began in 2005 with Crazy Egg, a heatmapping tool that helped website owners visualize where users were clicking, scrolling, and exiting. At a time when analytics were still confusing and code-heavy, Crazy Egg offered clean, visual feedback that anyone could understand.

In 2008, Shah co-founded KISSmetrics, a behavioral analytics platform focused on customer retention and lifetime value. It gave marketers and product teams more than just numbers — it gave them insights into how to keep users coming back.

By 2018, he turned his attention to cloud productivity. With FYI, he built a tool to help people search across all their cloud documents in seconds. And now, with Nira, Shah leads a team focused on real-time document access control, giving businesses visibility into who can see what — across Google Drive, Slack, Notion, and more.

The overlooked power of boring but essential tools

None of Shah’s products are flashy. That’s intentional.

While many tech founders chase hype cycles or consumer trends, Shah has always been focused on useful, durable tools. Each company he builds solves a pain point that gets worse as teams grow — from document chaos to user churn.

He’s also behind Quick Sprout, a content marketing and SEO tool, and Product Habits, a resource for product strategy. These ventures have become cornerstones for content marketers and product leaders building sustainable growth systems.

Investing in the next generation of product-led founders

Shah doesn’t just build software — he backs others doing the same. As an investor and advisor, he’s supported companies like Automattic (WordPress), Buffer, and SlideShare. His insight as a builder makes him a sought-after guide for early-stage SaaS founders looking to scale with substance.

He shares his thinking regularly through his blog at hitenshah.net, on social media, and through podcast appearances that reach hundreds of thousands. On Twitter/X alone, he’s built a following of over 225,000 — mostly through teaching, not selling.

What Hiten Shah’s approach reveals about building SaaS in 2025

While other founders chase unicorn valuations, Shah focuses on product fit, team alignment, and solving real problems for people who will pay. His portfolio isn’t defined by viral moments. It’s defined by utility, retention, and trust.

Shah’s career proves that the most valuable software isn’t always loud. It’s often quiet, essential, and impossible to replace.
